Volunteers as a complement to professional social work with foster families
HAVLOVÁ, Jana
Volunteering can be understood as a voluntarily chosen activity, which is practised for the benefit of others, without any claim for a financial reward. The volunteers operate in various fields, one of the most common is the social field. This bachelor thesis deals with volunteering as a complement to professional social work with foster families. Its main aim is to map out the use of volunteers in the social work with foster families. Other main aim is to describe the contribution of volunteers to the work with foster families, from the point of view of the social workers. The results of the research are contained in the practical part of this thesis. To reach the set aims, a technique of qualitative research was used. As a data-gathering method was chosen the method of interviewing, which took place with the help of the method of semi-controlled interviews. Five communication partners were interviewed, and the data were rewritten into tables for better orientation, with the help of open coding and categorisation of the data. The results showed that 13 following institutions operate in the South Bohemian region, whereas the volunteers are used for the work with foster families only in five of these institutions. Foster families are offered many forms of volunteering from these institutions, these forms differ by their structure and content. The role of a volunteer in an organisation is perceived very positively, primarily because the volunteer and the child can establish a very friendly relationship. This relationship is perceived by social workers as a great complement to their work. The contribution of volunteers in the organisation is perceived very positively. The results in my bachelor thesis can be useful for social services providers, as well as for the accompanying institutions. The results can also show to those accompanying institutions, which don't use volunteers, what are possible benefits of volunteering in the work with foster families.
